Abstract:
Tissue-specific stem cells are crucial in maintaining homeostasis and integrity of adult organs. In the conducting airways of the lung, these cells occupy the basal compartment of the epithelium and give rise to multiple differentiated cell types. Under persistent injury by environmental stressors or adverse conditions, mechanisms normally used to maintain the balance of stemness–differentiation of the basal cells can be hijacked to generate aberrant patterns of cellular fate and proliferation characteristic of disease. There are major gaps of knowledge in the understanding of the origin, diversity and regulation of these airway stem cells. This talk will discuss our current studies that reveal how the airway stem cell compartment is organized from prenatal stages to adult life and  our efforts to characterize the diversity and plasticity of these cells in the adult lung.
