Advancing anti-racist practices in genomics

May 19, 2023
1:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Location: UC Santa Cruz Engineering 2, B-180

In order to promote dialogue and action that will lead to a more just and anti-racist culture of research, the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute will be hosting a half-day symposium, “Advancing Anti-racist Practices in Genomics.” This symposium will include speakers from the UC Santa Cruz genomics community and outside guests, including a keynote talk by Dr. Erich Jarvis from Rockefeller University. The symposium is scheduled for May 19, 2023, beginning at 1pm – see full schedule below.

Registration for the symposium is limited and priority will be given staff, faculty, and students of the Genomics Institute and our affiliate labs, but the keynote will be open to the public.

The evening will conclude with a musical performance by AZA that is meant to tie in themes from the rest of the afternoon. AZA has provided this description: “In this unique edutainment session, participants will engage in a live music experience that serves as the basis for a guided discussion that merges art, science, and history. The performance is a case study to understand how music has historically been used to decolonize cultural spaces and heal communities. We then discover and discuss ways in which we can use art to decolonize academic spaces today. Through guided engagement with the music and educational material from the morning session, participants will understand the role music has played in liberation movements and explore mechanisms by which they can use art forms to decolonize their own spaces and heal in communities. This session is a collective practice in embodying cultural change through engaging with music and its themes.”
