GIST: Pathogen Genomics

In the last two years, the global pandemic has opened up a new area of focus for the Genomics Institute. For this month’s Genomics Institute in Sync Talk (GIST), our relatively new Pathogen Genomics team will be presenting on their work. Please join us Monday, July 11th, from 12pm to 1pm live in B279 (Double Helix Room) or by adding the Zoom link to your calendar.

We hope you will all join us to learn more about this important new research focus.

Abstract
Response by the scientific community to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has created an unprecedented amount of genomic data that has to be processed and analyzed quickly to have a public health impact. Our Pathogen Genomics team partnered with the California Department of Public Health to assist in identifying and tracking the distribution and abundance of genetic variants in pathogens across the state of California, improve modeling, and inform policy decisions, beginning with SARS-CoV-2. We are building tools that allow public health experts to track the geographical spread of the virus, and to assist epidemiologists in exploring outcomes and applications downstream of those tools using PHI data. We are excited to show you the CA Big Tree Cluster Tracker and the CA Big Tree Investigator, and to discuss how tools such as UShER, Taxonium, StrainHub, Nextstrain, and Terra are helping us support public health.
