In a new commentary for Cell, Genomics Institute Advisor and Affiliated FacultyJenny Reardon and her colleagues discuss how inadequate attention to past and ongoing incidents of injustice have built public mistrust in science. They propose shaping new studies in genomics, neuroscience, and AI in such a way that questions of ethics and justice are engaged from the very beginning. They argue that this realignment will help rebuild public faith in science and announce a framework for Leadership in the Equitable and Ethical Design (LEED) of Science and Engineering, a collaborative project with Columbia, University of Washington, Seattle, Stanford, UCLA, and Harvard.
