Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is a big part of the fabric of the Genomics Institute and UCSC. We seek to accelerate and expand the translation of our discoveries and recognize that the for-profit sector possesses unique expertise, capabilities, and resources to help further develop and bring to market novel technologies and discoveries at the Genomics Institute.
The Genomics Institute and UCSC offer programming, mentoring, support, facilities and more. The UCSC Innovation & Business Engagement Hub is responsible for developing and maintaining these important activities.
Technologies developed by UC Genomics Institute faculty affiliates and research staff have led to a number of profitable startups:
Five3 Genomics
Algorithms processing and analyzing genome sequences. Acquired by Nantworks.
Maverix Biomics
Advanced biological analysis available for numerous types of organisms.
MagArray
Commercialized biomarker detection technology for medical use.
DoveTail Genomics
In vitro binding approach simplifying genomic analysis with the help of high quality genomic information and data processing.
Astrea Forensics
Applies proprietary ancient DNA techniques to difficult-to-solve forensic casework to solve cold cases.
Ontera
Originally founded as “Two Pore Guys.” Specializes in silicon-based nanopore diagnostics.
BioStinger
Acquired by Yokogawa. Develops minimally invasive technology to target specific locations inside individual cells, enabling the injection of target substances such as genes or drugs and the extraction of intracellular materials.
